Blog Index A Baby Elephant Is Born

By Ranger Marco

Mothers Day was celebrated very appropriately by the arrival of a healthy elephant calf to one of our Sanbona elephant cows.

We were greeted with this exciting news on Sunday morning. This new arrival heralded the sixth elephant calf born on Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

Elephants have the longest gestation period of all mammals, carrying their young for nearly two years before giving birth. These long developmental periods are common among highly intelligent animals. Since elephants are the largest living, and biggest brained land animal in the world, there is a lot of development to be done in the womb.

The whole herd is very protective of the new calf and have eagerly welcomed it into their lives at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. We will keep you up to date with the adventures of this new elephant and its family over the coming months here and on our Facebook Page.
